The benefits of teaching chess to children are manifold. Studies suggest that the cognitive-boosting board game, which has endured around the world for more than 15 centuries, improves a child’s visual memory, attention span, spatial-reasoning ability, critical thinking, mental discipline, creativity, math skills, and logical reasoning. One study found that children who played chess scored an average of 10 percentage points higher on reading scores than their peers who didn’t play.
In the short documentary The Magic of Chess, which premieres on The Atlantic today, a cadre of pint-size chess champions reveals how the practice has enriched their lives. The director Jenny Schweitzer Bell shot the film on location at the 2019 Elementary Chess Championships, a high-stakes tournament held annually in Nashville. In attendance—and interviewed in the film—was Tani Adewumi, the 8-year-old Nigerian refugee who, while living in a homeless shelter with his family, beat elite-private-school kids in the New York Chess Championships.

The other day as I awaited the MARTA train a younger gentleman sat beside me on the platform. He opened his bag and took out knitting needles, then proceeded to do his thing. We made eye contact and I said, “My Mother knitted.” Taken aback he managed to say, “Oh really?”
“Yes. She even had a knitting machine when she was older,” I said. He smiled. “I receive comments about knitting and some are not so kind,” he stated. “Then you ought to tell them about Rosey Grier.”
From the accent it was obvious he had not been born in the US, so I figured he had no clue as to who was Rosey Grier. It was then a woman joined the conversation saying, “My mom loved Rosey Grier!” At this point I sat back and listened to their conversation, learning the young man had come to the US and earned a degree in Computer Science. He enjoyed knitting while watching television in the evening. She informed him that Rosey Grier was a “Big bear of a man who weighed three hundred pounds and played football.”
Everyone was smiling as the train rolled to a stop. Before entering the train car he looked at me and said, “Thank you, sir. It is so nice to receive such a nice comment rather than what some men often say.”

Marshall James Kavanaugh had been set up for about an hour in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square — with a typewriter, a framed photo of James Baldwin,
and a yellow sign that read “PICK A TOPIC GET A POEM” — when Jules Skodzinski walked up on a recent Friday.
Skodzinski, 58, a burly guy, told Kavanaugh his mom died recently. It was tough, he said, but it also brought him and his siblings closer. Could he maybe write a poem for him about strong bonds?
And in about five minutes, Kavanaugh, 32, of West Philly, did.
It began:
tested in night and day
the bonds of a family
grow stronger through the storms
that attempt to push them away
Skodzinsky marveled at the poem, which he said he planned to share with his siblings. “He’s an artist but also a technician,”Skodzinsky said of Kavanaugh. “I think this is like the difference between saying something and singing it.”

Does Poetry Have Street Cred?

Does American poetry suffer from an abundance of artistic dignity and not enough street credibility? It’s possible. When I asked a friend, a terrific prose writer, why she seems to have a slight disdain for poetry, she replied, “It’s too elitist, like walking through a beautiful forest in which I know not where to look, much less know what I am searching for. If I don’t get it as a reader, then I feel like an idiot and somehow not worthy of the form.” In years past, I would have fretted and dismissed her remarks as garden-variety philistinism, but my friend is admirably sensitive, a brilliant scholar, Ivy educated, and not someone prone to make trivializing remarks without great consideration.
